John Hedrick is "Pastor of Youth" here at FBC. He writes about himself:
I am excited about the journey that God has led our family on, which has brought us to Waldoboro. It has indeed been a journey, as God called me to trust Him in the change away from my full-time professional firefighting career into full-time ministry.
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, where my parents took my older brother and me to church, stressing the importance of consistent attendance. I am very grateful for the Christian home and foundation that my parents started in my life. There have been many influential mentors along the way, and I believe in that saying that it takes the church "village to raise a family." My mother reminds me that she dedicated me as an infant to serve God. I made the decision to follow Jesus Christ when I was 10 years old during a week of Vacation Bible School. Then when I was a junior in high school, my parents moved to Virginia to take care of their parents.
I met my wonderful wife, Brenda, in college at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia. We started doing youth work together as volunteers. Together we continued in various aspects of youth ministry, even after our children were born. We worked at a church in Augusta, Maine, for a three-year term of service and then felt God calling us back to Virginia. While in Virginia, I attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and obtained a Certificate of Ministry Studies. Through the years I continued in various forms of youth ministry, all while I continued to work as a professional firefighter. As we journeyed, we felt God very distinctively calling me away from a full-time firefighting career to full-time ministry.
I am blessed to have my wonderful helpmate alongside me for over twenty years. We are also blessed with two children: Joy, 16, and Jacob, 9. I love spending time with the family and watching the children’s sporting events. We enjoy outdoor adventures, hiking, camping, etc. I also enjoy collecting baseball cards and have quite the collection. I love to travel and enjoy a great cup of coffee. I love the ocean and can watch it for hours.
My favorite Bible verses come from Isaiah 40:28-31, as it talks about how our hope and strength come from the Lord. Verse 31: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
