First Baptist Church of Waldoboro, ME
We are a theologically conservative group of Christian believers seeking to worship our Lord, build one another up in spiritual growth, and reach our world with the message of forgiveness and new life in Christ.
We are a somewhat rural church located in Waldoboro, Maine, in the heart of the Midcoast region, about one hour north of Portland and two hours south of Bar Harbor. We minister to around 650 people on a regular basis with an average weekly attendance of around 450. We are one of the largest churches in the region, and most churches in the area are 200 or less. We are also one of the few churches that has had multiple staff positions in the area in recent years. Our area is a great area to raise a family, and our church is made up of mostly growing families, with a good mixture of older folks and college/career age people mixed in, although we'd love to see some growth in that age group. Many kids who grow up in the area do not remain here after college, but end up finding employment out of state. Employment has been good in the recent past, but some significant changes in the region's employment picture are on the horizon, and the future seems uncertain.
In Fall 2002, we completed our Family Life Center, where we worship for the present time. It is a 20,000 square foot building which includes a full-size gym, 15 classrooms, 4 offices, a large youth center, a nursery, a church-run nursery school, and a kitchen. In Fall 2005, we added to the original building 6 more classrooms and a new, larger foyer with an information center and a conversational fireplace area. We are presently seeking God's direction on whether to build a sanctuary with classroom space in a basement beneath it, or a 3 story educational wing with additional offices, a library, much-needed storage space, and a new youth worship center.
